Let’s start with the basics. Jute is a natural fiber that comes from a tropical plant. The fiber is essentially made of dried bark, so it has a rustic and organic look. It also feels fairly rough to the touch, so some people choose not to use jute rugs at home so that they can walk around barefoot comfortably. Layering softer fabrics over jute rugs in high-traffic areas is a fantastic way to solve that issue.

Whether you’re playing with scale, positions, patterns, or textures, using jute rugs to layer is an excellent way to upgrade your living space. If you already own an area rug that’s too small and awkward, this can be a great way to incorporate it without throwing it out.

To make it work, it’s best to choose a large jute rug and place it underneath smaller area rugs. For example, in the living room, choose a jute rug that is big enough to sit beneath multiple pieces of furniture, spanning from the sofa to the coffee table. Then, place a smaller area rug just underneath the coffee table. 

To create a classic look, place both rugs parallel to your furniture at the same angle. Or, if you’d like to decorate your home with a bohemian style, you can play with angles and place the top layer in a non-square angle over the jute rug. You can also successfully style a round rug in your space using the jute layering method, either by using a round base layer with a rectangular area rug on top, or vice versa. And finally, try to experiment with three, four, or more rugs. Layer several area rugs in one space to make your living room pop, especially by using mismatched colors and patterns.
