A vase full of freshly cut blooms is one of life’s simple pleasures, but there’s nothing more frustrating than when they droop shortly after displaying them. This is particularly common with flowers that have hollowed stems due to the occurrence of air bubbles that end up blocking the water flow from the bottom of the stem to the head.

Did you know that there is a simple hack that can stop your cut flowers from drooping and make them look prettier for longer? All it takes is a pin or a needle. Go ahead and take your bunch of cut flowers and simply insert your pin or needle about 1 inch below the flower head and slowly remove it to prevent any damage to the stem.  Pop your flowers back into their vase and come back to them an hour or two later. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that your flowers have now successfully absorbed the water, resulting in them standing proudly and as good as new. 

Before you start pinpricking all of your cut flowers to make them last longer, it’s important to know that this hack only works on certain types that have hollowed stems. Tulips, for instance, love this technique as they are highly susceptible to drooping from dehydration. However, they aren’t the only type of flower that could benefit from this handy hack.

Other flowers that have hollow or semi-hollow stems include Gerbera daisies, daffodils, and roses. So, if you plan on displaying any of these in your home, it’s worth giving the pinprick hack a go to increase their life span and to stop them from drooping. This method has been known to make your blooms last longer than they would have if they were left to their own devices.

Furthermore, there are a handful of other ways to prevent your cut flowers from wilting or drooping which include cutting the stems at an angle before arranging them, ensuring they’re placed in a clean vase, and changing the water every one to two days. Using these tips and tricks alongside the pinpricking hack will no doubt improve the longevity of your freshly cut flowers.
