One person’s trash is a little bird’s treasure. If you’re hoping to attract more hummingbirds to your yard this season, or you simply don’t like to waste, there are a handful of reusable bathroom items that can be turned into hummingbird feeders with ease. One of those items is your old pill organizer. With just a soldering iron or a Dremel tool, a bit of glue, and some feeder flowers, you can whip up a multi-bird hummingbird feeder in just a few minutes. The pill organizer works great for this DIY project as it holds a good amount of liquid, lets multiple hummingbirds drink at once, is easy to clean and refill, and is portable so you can move it to the most convenient spot in your yard.
In addition to being portable, the small feeder can also fit in the palm of your hand if you want to get up close and personal with the buzzing birds. Keep in mind it may take a few weeks for the hummingbirds to discover the new feeding area. Though, once you understand how to attract birds to a new feeder, your upcycled pill organizer will be teeming with tiny feathered friends in no time.
Attract hummingbirds to your new DIY feeder
Before any crafting begins, be sure to thoroughly clean the pill organizer to remove any dust or pill remnants. To make the feeder, simply poke one hole in each lid of your pill container. To do this, you can use a either a soldering iron or a Dremel tool, which works great on plastic. Then, use hot glue to secure feeder flowers over the holes, like these Zelpont Hummingbird Feeder Replacement Flowers. Once the hot glue has dried, your container is ready to be filled with delicious nectar and placed outside. If you’re worried about the pill container blowing away, you can use double-sided tape to secure it to your railing or patio table.
To make your new feeder a hummingbird hotspot, you have to start with good construction. Depending on the design of your container, you may want to space the flowers out, only using every other pill slot, so that each bird has room to perch while they drink. You can also consider painting your pill box red as hummingbirds are naturally drawn to this color. For plastic pill organizers, it’s best to use an acrylic spray paint. Just remember to only paint the outside of your container so you don’t run the risk of paint chips mixing into your hummingbird nectar. Strategic placement of your new feeder will also help. For example, if your garden is filled with essential features for attracting hummingbirds, placing the feeder among other hummingbird-favorite flowers will bring all kinds of pollinators to your yard.
