Why Some HGTV Fans Don’t Like Unsellable Houses
HGTV has a history of bringing comfort TV to viewers with shows that blend real life with the inspiration of a renovation. Whether you’re enjoying Joanna Gaines’ stunning design choices on “Fixer Upper” or the feel-good opulence of “My Lottery Dream Home,” fans are enthusiastic about their favorites — and equally passionate about their not-so-favorites. However, few shows have created such a mix of love and saltiness as “Unsellable Houses.”
Hosted by twins Leslie Davis and Lyndsay Lamb, “Unsellable Houses” turns stagnant houses into hot properties. The premise doesn’t venture far from other HGTV shows: The sisters invest in homes that aren’t selling, renovate them, and flip them for a profit. It’s the kind of win-win HGTV fans usually love. And many do. The show has a loyal fanbase, but despite its popularity, “Unsellable Houses” has irked a segment of HGTV’s audience. So, why does it provoke so many salty comments?
Part of it comes down to personal taste. The sisters have big personalities. Their banter is refreshing for some viewers, but perhaps too much for others who want the tone to focus on design, which has even drawn its share of criticism. Others question the real estate side and whether profit margins are realistic. Every popular show has a few haters — and, in some cases, that’s a badge of honor. But if fans feel more peeved than inspired, that criticism might need to turn into a conversation.
Complaints about HGTV’s ‘Unsellable Houses’
If you spend time combing through social media, you’ll find different opinions from fans who adore “Unsellable Houses” and its hosts Leslie Davis and Lyndsay Lamb — and those who don’t. The sisters share a similar viewer sentiment with another pair of HGTV twins — the popular Property Brothers also have plenty of fans who don’t like them. Unlike those twins, Leslie and Lyndsay’s behavior has been called out as childish and tiresome on Rotten Tomatoes, like when they painted each other rather than the walls. They’ve also been accused of spending too much time talking about their personal lives and taking viewers along to get tattoos, for example.
As for their home decor style, Reddit commentators say the twins tend to over-stage the houses and make questionable design choices, like adding in an overabundance of patterns or cluttering the walls with art. But that’s just a matter of taste, which is relative. The opposite has also been voiced by other fans of the show. Even the best reality show doesn’t always deliver profits within the tough world of real estate. In the Season 4 “New Market, New Man” episode, the house sold for under the asking price, proving even the best professional renovations don’t always deliver results. However, the twins demonstrated they can take the criticism with a grain of salt. In 2023, they posted a TikTok video reading not-so-nice comments in the vein of Jimmy Kimmel’s “Mean Tweets.” Kudos to you, ladies.
