Glittery sconces once graced many buildings, with those of the Art Deco era being of particular note. Their smooth geometric lines and sparkling uniqueness denoted craftsmanship, elegance, and luxury, with many of the pieces constructed from quality materials like gold and white glass. The originals of those pretty vintage lamps might be long gone, but TikTok content creator @budgetfriendlycreations was able to tap into the spirit of them — glitter and all — thanks to an eye for design and a few items from the Dollar Tree.

A Dollar Tree napkin holder and a set of flexible cutting mats kick the project off. Craft dowels create supports for the sconce’s body. A pair of scissors and a measuring tape help sculpt the sconce into shape. And gold spray paint morphs the napkin holder from silver to gold, while a coat of white paint takes the flexible cutting mats from translucent white to opaque.

As for the glitter for this stylish Dollar Tree sconce? It comes courtesy of some carefully placed DomeStar craft gems. The clear gems glow a soft white when the lamps beneath sconce’s outer sheath light up. However, the gems come in a variety of colors, from pink to navy blue, giving you the freedom to choose hues that match your decor or to make several sconces of different colors. The craft gems also come in different shapes, like red hearts. Using these as your gems of choice would add an interesting textural element to the sconce. Finally, all of this is held together with the help of some E6000 and the glue from your glue gun.

Assembling the sconce and all its glitter

You’ll repurpose a Dollar Tree napkin holder to give create the bones of the sconce and to give it its rounded shape. Give it a couple of coats of Rust-Oleum gold metallic spray paint. Spray paint one of the flexible cutting mats white as well and then cut it so that it covers the napkin holder. If you’d like to up the glitter factor, swap out the white spray paint and replace it with gold, which leaves you with a solid gold band around the lamp’s center.

Once the paint on the napkin holder is dry, use it to measure a cover for the lamp. After trimming the piece, which is made from one of the cutting mats, it needs to be fitted with dowels, like these HOPELF bamboo craft dowels. These give the lamp a more solid structure when you eventually insert it inside the napkin holder frame.

In the final stage, you’ll glue the craft gems on the flexible cutting mat one by one. You have some options here. If you’re aiming for a sleeker look (as embodied by Art Deco), you can leave it completely free the gems. If you’ve spray painted the centerpiece gold, it’ll still have the bling factor. The other option is to create patterns with the gems. For example, make horizontal or vertical stripes by laying down a line of clear gems and then a line of blue or pink gems. Repeat this pattern until the lamp is covered completely with gems.
