When perusing smart storage solutions for your workout equipment, you’re likely to come across some purely-functional options that are made of out metal. While you can find some aesthetic units, they’re likely to cost a pretty penny. Take, for instance, the Ana Combo Set with Gym Equipment, which costs over $10,000.

If you want a similar look without such a high cost, consider creating your own gym storage rack out of two HOLMERUD side tables from IKEA. By attaching these two tables together and incorporating a surface on top, you can create both functional and aesthetic storage for a fraction of the cost. If you don’t have a dedicated room for working out, this storage unit could be placed in a living room, garage, or office. However, it’s best to keep gym equipment out of the bedroom.

For the tabletop, you’ll need a few RÖEDEBY armrest trays. Alternatively, a simple piece of plywood cut to size could be used for the top of the storage unit, if desired. If you want a slightly different look, you could replace the side tables with two HOLMERUD coffee tables, though these cost more and would have slightly less storage. Keep in mind that both the HOLMERUD side tables and coffee tables come in two colors — oak effect and dark brown — so choose the one you prefer or use one of each for a dual-tone effect.

Building the gym storage unit of your dreams

To begin, build the two HOLMERUD side tables according to IKEA’s instructions. Then, attach them to one another with construction adhesive so their flat sides are touching and clamp them together until they are fully dry. Next, measure the size of the tabletop and mark it on your RÖEDEBY armrest trays so they’ll fit in the space. Cut along these lines with a circular saw.

Now sand down the edges so they don’t feel rough and clean off any dust. Attach these pieces to the top with construction adhesive and clamp them down. Once dry, brush on a layer of top oil. To hide the vertical seam in the middle of the two side tables, affix a thin strip of wood with more construction adhesive. Once everything is dry, simply place your equipment on the shelves.

To achieve the most aesthetic look for a home gym that will inspire you to work out, pay attention to the look of your actual gym equipment. Dress up dumbbells with peel-and-stick contact paper, like the Decoroom Wood Contact Paper. Alternatively, purchase aesthetic equipment like the WeGym SafeGrip Dumbbells in a muted color. Keep in mind that the HOLMERUD side tables can only hold 33 pounds each, so you shouldn’t place too much weight on them. Besides weights, you could also store bands, towels, and sneakers on the shelves. You may want to place a thin rubber mat down underneath shoes to catch any debris. Keep small items inside labeled baskets for ease of use.
