If you’re looking for a new way to add style and coziness to your space without breaking the bank, we’ve got the perfect DIY for you. This DIY floor pouf is super easy to make, even if you have very limited sewing skills. Don’t be intimidated, if you can sew a straight line, you’re already halfway there.

All you need is some fabric and a zipper to create the pouf structure, and some fabric scraps or blankets to use as stuffing. While this is an easy, beginner-friendly DIY, it does require a sewing machine. If you don’t already have one, consider looking for used ones at garage sales and thrift shops, or ask around if a friend would be willing to lend you theirs.

You can use this pouf as extra seating in your living room, a small footrest, or even a spot for your cat to lounge while you watch TV. It’s a fun DIY project you can do in just a few hours, and it’s a no-waste way to reuse fabric scraps you already have. A pouf can also be used for extra storage, like blankets and scarves that you don’t often use but don’t want to throw away. The pouf can open with a zipper, so whatever you put in there isn’t lost forever.

How to sew a floor pouf

To make this DIY pouf, start by cutting some fabric. For a pouf that’s 13 inches tall and 16 inches wide, you’ll need two circles that are 16 inches in diameter, and two rectangles that are 25.12 by 13 inches. You can tailor these measurements to your preference and the amount of fabric you have. What you should know is that the width of one rectangle equals half the circumference of the circles.

It sounds complicated, but it’s not. Decide on the diameter of your floor pouf. Now, use a circumference calculator to find the circumference with your chosen diameter, divide it by two, and you’re good to go. The height of the rectangles will determine the height of your floor pouf, so you can choose whatever you like. Then, sew it all together inside out, with a small zipper where the rectangles meet, like in the video. Once done, the zipper lets you turn the pouf inside out to reveal the fabric and the beautiful seams.

Now, time to stuff the pouf. This is a great way to repurpose fabric scraps and upcycle blankets, but if you don’t have enough scraps to use, consider some more typical pouf fillers. Things like polyester fibers, bean bag refills from Posh Creations, or shredded memory foam filling from Dr.Dudu will work perfectly. If you have an outdated beanbag chair that you’re planning to get rid of, save the filling and upcycle it in your DIY floor pouf.
