The Fan-Favorite IKEA Item That Stops Coffee Mugs From Cluttering Up Your Cabinets
Some people collect dolls. Others have a fondness for matchbox race cars, but the foodies among us, well, they love seeing all of their vintage and collectible coffee mugs in one place. Fortunately for them, IKEA invented the BILLY/OXBERG bookcase with glass-paned double doors, which costs $169. Nothing could get lost behind those see-through doors, even your prized mug collection. So, if you’ve already utilized every inch of your cabinet storage space and would like to declutter your kitchen cabinets and create more coffee mug storage space, then this IKEA piece might be just the thing you need to inspire you to make the switch.
Like most of IKEA’s wares, a great deal of flexibility is built into the cabinet. This shelf stands nearly 80 inches high, is almost 12 inches deep, and is 31.5 inches wide. It also comes in six hues, ranging from white to black oak. In other words, wherever you decide to put your mug collection, it’s probably going to match the surrounding decor.
However, not everyone has a mug collection that is large enough to fill a standard-sized BILLY cabinet, which may explain why their collection still takes up space in their cupboards. IKEA does have some smaller models of the BILLY that are about half the size and still come in several colors. These might be a better option for someone whose collection doesn’t quite merit a full-sized cabinet just yet. One of the smaller IKEA BILLY models is sans glass-front doors and runs about $40. The other BILLY by IKEA boasts a single glass-paned door and will set you back $89.
The practicality of using the BILLY for your mug collection
All coffee mugs are not created equal. Some are short and fat. Others stand tall. Still others have no handle to speak of. In light of that, it’s wise to consider the amount of space you’ll have in that cabinet you’ve earmarked for your mug collection. The BILLY cabinet boasts six shelves, with nearly a foot of space between each shelf, provided that you space the shelves evenly when you put the unit together. The space between the shelves should be enough to house most of the different collectible tumblers from Starbucks, for example, even if they differ in height.
However, this popular furniture item is more than some extra coffee mug storage space. It’s appropriate for all kinds of collectibles. Take a beer stein collection. They’re basically mugs with jolly attitudes and happy pictures molded onto their sides. Most of them are naturally tall, though some of the specialty ones are really, really, really big — like a foot or two tall big in some cases. Because the BILLY’s shelves are adjustable, your tallest and shortest pieces should find a resting place in the cabinet, whether the stein measures 12 inches or 24 inches.
The other feature worth reiterating is the glass doors. Some collectibles, like the McDonald’s Happy Meal character glasses, may not be very tall. However, that’s not why people collect them. The real standout feature for this type of memorabilia is the artwork on the front, something that most collectors will want to show off, and which can, fortunately, be easily seen through the glass panes of the popular IKEA bookcase.
