'NO OTHER OPTION' There’s a heartbreaking reason why this three-month-old puppy was abandoned at an airport

Little Chewy the Chihuahua was found in a bathroom at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas

A DESPERATE woman abandoned her tiny Chihuahua puppy at an airport for a truly heartbreaking reason.

Three-month-old Chewy was found in a bathroom at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas along with a note explaining why the pup had been left behind.

The tragic note tells how Chewy's owner was a victim of domestic abuse and explains that she can't afford to take her pet on the flight she is waiting for.

Chewy's former owner also says why the poor puppy has a "big knot on his head", which she claims was the result of her abusive ex-boyfriend kicking the dog during a fight.

The note Chewy was left with reads: "Hi! I'm Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn't afford me to get on the flight.

"She didn't want to leave me with all her heart but she has NO other option.

"My ex boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet.

"I love Chewy sooo much please love and take care of him."

When airport staff found the puppy they handed him in to Connor and Millie's Dog Rescue in Las Vegas.

The rescue centre took to Facebook to share the details of the tragic story, writing: "Please share in hopes that his mom sees this that she was brave to leave and that he will have a great life."

The good news is that Chewy is now doing well although the identity of the woman who left him in the airport is still unknown.

Fox 11 reports that there was "tremendous interest" in the puppy with the rescue centre swamped with people asking to adopt him.

Darlene Blair, of Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue, said the decision to leave a pet behind must have been so hard for Chewy's former owner.

She told  News 3 Las Vegas: "This one really got to me.
"You could tell by the way the note was written that the woman was in dire stress and she didn’t want to give him up and she couldn’t take him with her.

“I know it's hard when you're in that situation to trust someone but there are good people out there – and if you're in that situation and you need help to take your dog with you try not to be too afraid to ask for help."

Meanwhile, airport officials want to remind pet owners that the airport is no place to leave an animal since you never know who will pick it up - and when.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time we've had to report on an innocent dog being abandoned.

We recently shared the story of Electra the abandoned pooch whose sad eyes when she realised her owners weren't coming home reduced people to tears.

And we also told how a heartless owner dumped his elderly dog in a field with a note saying: "I don't need a dog".
