But now, long after being abandoned by us, these parts of the world have been conquered by nature once again.
Haunting photographs have captured the beauty of some of the planet's most stunning abandoned places, with each one telling its own story of desertion and decay.
They have been published in a new book: Abandoned: The Most Beautiful Forgotten Places From Around The World.
One shot shows all that remains of the Buzludzha Monument in Bulgaria, which used to serve as the HQ of the Communist Party before it was abandoned in 1989.
In the decades since the collapse of communism, the old building has started to fall apart, standing as a gravestone to a dead ideology.
Meanwhile, other incredible photos capture car graveyards from around the world, where the abandoned vehicles have been dumped and left to rust.
Other shots centre on the remains of once-proud buildings, like an abandoned palace in Italy where the rotten floor collapsed on itself.
And another stunning photograph shows an entire abandoned village in China, where creepers have blanketed the empty houses in their entirety.
The Sunday People reports that author Mathew Growcoot travelled the world shooting abandoned places and collecting images from other photographers.
He said: "The brave men and women who venture into these places in their spare time do us a service by shedding light on quite literally dark places.”
