 This reminded me that for we HUMANS it's not always the best idea to do something just because "everybody else is doing it".

Genius in my book.  I love the fact that the bucket itself was high enough so they could not even try to get back out - it's also great that there were not more of them or the top would have heaved enough for them to try to escape.

Similar to my idea to keep bugs away from cat/dog food. You get two plastic bowls the same size. Put hole in bottom of one and zip tie that to a rack. Place the non hole in the hole bowl and then place the rack in thing of water. I used a rectangle small storage container and one of those white racks used in the kitchen. Most bugs don’t like water.
